Wispr Flow pricing: what $144 a year buys, 2026
Wispr Flow Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, and the free plan caps desktop at 2,000 words a week. Plans, 3-year cost, and what the speech-to-text costs.
Speech-to-text API A speech-to-text API is a paid service that turns an audio file or stream into text and bills per minute of audio. Dictation apps either call one for you or let you call it with your own key.

As of 2026-09-27, Wispr Flow Pro costs $15 a month, or $144 a year billed yearly. The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile. Over three years, Pro costs $432. The speech-to-text underneath costs far less: about $0.27 an hour of audio on OpenAI’s API, or $0.04 on Groq. What the rest of the price buys is hosting, apps on four platforms, team features and a notetaker.

The free plan cap
2,000 words a week is about 13 minutes of talking at a conversational pace (roughly 150 words a minute). For a few Slack replies a day that is enough. If you dictate email, briefs or prompts to a coding agent, 13 minutes of talking can go in a single working day.
The cap resets weekly. It is a trial with a long tail, not a plan to live on.
Other apps draw the line differently, as of 2026-09-27. Willow gives unlimited use of a weaker model plus 20 uses a week of its better one. Superwhisper gives Pro features for 3,000 words, then a reduced free tier. Nota gives the first 5,000 words free with no account, once, then asks for a one-time payment. Spokenly and Handy are free for local use with no cap.
3-year cost
Subscriptions are easy to underestimate because you never see the total.
- Pro, billed yearly: $144 a year, $432 over 3 years.
- Pro, billed monthly: $180 a year, $540 over 3 years.
- Growth, billed yearly: $216 per user a year, $648 over 3 years.
For comparison, as of 2026-09-27, several Mac apps sell dictation once: MacWhisper at €64, Nota $79 ($59 early bird until December 31, 2026), Superwhisper lifetime $249.99. They differ a lot in what they include; pay-once dictation apps compared has the detail.
What the underlying speech-to-text costs
A dictation app does two jobs: turn audio into text, and optionally clean the text up. Both are sold as public APIs, per minute or per token.
At list prices as of 2026-09-27:
- OpenAI GPT Transcribe: $0.0045 a minute, about $0.27 an hour.
- Groq Whisper large-v3 turbo: about $0.04 an hour.
- Deepgram Nova-3: about $0.29 an hour (streaming, one language).
- A cleanup pass on a small language model: about a cent an hour.
Providers bill by the length of the audio, not by words. Silence counts too, which is why Nota trims long pauses before a recording is sent.
Four hours of speech a month on GPT Transcribe comes to about $1.10. On Groq, about $0.16. On a local model running on your Mac, $0.
The screenshot above is sample usage: about 30 minutes of cloud speech-to-text across three providers cost under $0.15 at list prices, and the AI rewrite another $0.04.
So the $12 a month is not paying for transcription. It pays for Wispr running the service, the mobile apps, sync, team admin, security certifications and the Notetaker. Those have real value; the question is whether you use them.
Break-even against a one-time licence
The arithmetic is short. A $79 licence equals about 5 months of Pro billed monthly ($15) and about 6.6 months billed yearly ($12). Add a cloud speech model on your own key at four hours a month, about $1.10, and the break-even moves by a few days. After a year, the subscription has cost $144 and the licence is paid off.
The comparison only holds if the cheaper app does what you need. If you rely on the phone app, it does not. If you work on two Macs, compare per seat: Wispr bills per user, while pay-once apps sell licences by the number of Macs (Nota’s Duo covers 2 for $119, $89 at launch).
When Wispr Flow is worth it
Wispr Flow is the better buy if you:
- dictate on iPhone, Android or Windows as well as the Mac;
- need team billing, admin controls, or its SOC 2, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certifications;
- want meeting notes in the same subscription;
- never want to see an API key.
It is a poor fit if you work on one or two Macs, want dictation to keep working offline, or want to pick the speech model yourself. In that case a pay-once app with local models, and your own key for the cloud when you want it, costs less than one year of Pro.
