Talk to ChatGPT and Claude on Mac without typing
Dictate prompts to ChatGPT and Claude on a Mac: hold a key, speak, check the text, press Return. Voice mode vs dictated text, and a mode set per site.
Dictation vs voice mode Dictation turns your speech into text you can edit before sending. A voice mode is a spoken conversation: the app sends each turn when you stop talking and answers out loud.

To dictate prompts to ChatGPT or Claude on a Mac, use a system-wide dictation app with a hold-to-talk key: click into the chat box, hold the key, say the prompt, let go, read it, press Return. Keep the text close to raw, because the model on the other end handles spoken language fine. As of 2026-09-27 this works the same in the desktop apps and in the browser.
Voice mode vs dictated text
Chat apps have their own voice features (ChatGPT, Claude). They are built for a conversation: you talk, it answers out loud. That is good for thinking something through while walking. For a prompt you want to get right, you want text you can look at first.
| Method | Editable before send | Works in |
|---|---|---|
| A chat app’s voice conversation | No, your turn is sent when you stop | That one app |
| A chat app’s own dictate button, where there is one | Yes | That one app |
| Apple Dictation (built in, free) | Yes | Any text field, one language at a time |
| A system-wide dictation app such as Nota | Yes | Any app and any website |
The system-wide option is the only one that also covers the places you write about the same work: the doc, the ticket, the Slack thread, the terminal.
Why spoken prompts work
People type short prompts because typing is slow. They speak long ones because speaking is not.
A spoken prompt tends to carry the things a model needs and a typed one leaves out: who it is for, what you tried, what you don’t want, what good looks like. Two minutes of talking is a few hundred words of context, and the model reads rambling text without trouble.
The one thing to check before Return is names. Product names, people, file names: those are the words speech models guess wrong. Fix them once in the dictionary and they stop coming back.
Set a mode by website
In Nota, a mode is a set of choices (speech model, language, rewrite, what happens after the paste) that switches on by itself for certain apps or websites.
- Open Modes and click New mode. Call it Prompt.
- Leave Rewrite with AI off. The prompt goes in as you said it.
- Under apps and websites, add the ChatGPT and Claude apps, then the addresses
chatgpt.comandclaude.ai. Website matching works in Safari, Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Dia, Opera, Vivaldi, Orion and Yandex Browser, and a website match wins over an app match. - Leave Auto send on None, so you still read the text before sending. If you trust it, Return is one option away.
If you use Smart Dictation elsewhere, it runs in every mode with the rewrite off. For prompts, add a destination rule for chatgpt.com and claude.ai that points to a style of your own, such as “keep my wording, only fix punctuation”. The modes docs and Smart Dictation docs cover both.
Three prompt patterns that work spoken
Context first, ask last. “I’m writing a launch email for a Mac app, audience is designers, tone is plain. Here’s the draft… Make it shorter and cut anything that sounds like marketing.” Speaking in that order is natural, and it is the order models handle best.
Say what you don’t want. “Don’t add a summary at the end, don’t use bullet points.” Negative instructions are tedious to type and easy to say.
Think out loud, then point. Talk through the problem for a minute, then finish with “given all that, what would you do first?” The rambling is the context. You don’t need to clean it up.
Hold-to-talk and the other trigger options are on the shortcuts page.
Questions
Can I dictate into ChatGPT on Mac?
Yes. Any system-wide dictation tool types into the ChatGPT app or website like a keyboard.
Should an AI clean up my prompt before I send it?
Usually not. Send prompts close to raw; the model on the other end reads messy speech well. Keep the heavier cleanup for emails and messages.
Can dictation switch style on a specific website?
In Nota, yes. Modes switch by app and by website address in supported browsers, so chatgpt.com can get its own mode.
Nota is dictation for Mac: hold a key, talk, and it types. It is almost ready: get notified on release day, and the first 5,000 words will be free.
