Docs Using Nota
Voice Edit
Select existing text and say what to change. Nota returns an edited version using your chosen AI.
Voice Edit changes text that already exists. Select a sentence or paragraph, then say an instruction such as “make this shorter” or “change the date to Friday”. It is separate from a mode that rewrites a new dictation before pasting it.
Set it up
- Connect an AI provider in Nota, or configure a local Ollama or compatible AI server. Voice Edit needs an AI model for the edit.
- Open Settings › Voice Edit. Choose AI model, or use Automatic to follow the current mode's AI and then an available connected provider.
- Assign Voice edit on the Shortcuts page.
- Grant Accessibility so Nota can read a selection and replace it.
Edit a selection
- Select the text in the app you are working in.
- Use your Voice Edit shortcut and speak the change you want.
- Stop the recording. The recorder shows Editing while the AI prepares the result.
- Review the replacement. If the app or selection is no longer suitable, Nota can show the result for copying rather than replacing unrelated text.
The instruction and selected text go to your chosen AI. With a cloud AI they leave your Mac for that provider; a local AI keeps that processing local. See Privacy controls.
If the selection cannot be read
Some custom fields do not expose their selection through Accessibility. Nota can use a Copy fallback where available, or tell you that no usable selection was found. Keep the original text selected until the edit completes. It cannot edit a document it cannot read or write through the app's field.
Retry and undo
If the AI step fails, Nota leaves the original selection alone and can offer Retry. After a successful replacement, Remove last dictation can restore the original selection when the target field still allows it. See Delivery and undo.
Voice Edit is subject to the word trial and privacy controls. In an app marked Local only, a cloud AI edit is refused rather than silently sending the selection away.
